残障资源中心的使命是什么?

The mission of 残疾人士资源中心 is to unite the 十大博彩推荐排名州立大学 community in an effort to provide students with disabilities the excellence and equity in education to which they are legally entitled. We promote the full and active participation of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of post-secondary education while advocating and facilitating equal educational opportunities. This can be accomplished through appropriate support services, curricula, instruction, and policy. The ultimate goal of these services is to enable students to succeed academically, 改善记忆力, and provide students with the opportunity to acquire the tools needed to live successful lives in the future.

What Laws Provide Protection to Students with Disabilities?

Two major pieces of legislation protect the rights of people with disabilities: Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Section 504 protects the civil rights of qualified individuals with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is a civil rights guarantee for persons with disabilities in the US. It provides people with disabilities protection from discrimination on the basis of disability.

谁受法律保护?

Section 504 states that: “No otherwise qualified person with a disability in the US shall, 完全由于残疾的原因, 被剥夺…的利益, 被排除在…之外, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.“根据第504条, a person with a disability includes any person who has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities; has a record of such an impairment; or is regarded as having such an impairment. 成为一个“合格”的残疾人, a person must meet the academic and technical standards required for 入学 or participation in a post-secondary institution’s 项目 和活动.

根据美国残疾人协会 , a person with a disability is anyone with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, 包括散步等任务, 看到, 听力, 说话, 和学习. The ADA mandates that reasonable modifications in policies, 实践, and procedures must be made as necessary to avoid discrimination on the basis of disability. The ADA upholds and extends the standards for compliance set forth in Section 504.

涵盖哪些类型的残疾?

学习障碍——慢性疾病, 比如癫痫, 糖尿病, and cancer – Psychological disabilities – Blindness or visual impairments – Deafness or 听力 impairments – Mobility impairments – Spinal cord injury – Traumatic brain injury – Other conditions meeting the definition of disability

What is the Impact of these Laws on Post-Secondary Education?

Section 504 and the ADA mean that colleges and universities receiving federal financial assistance must not discriminate in the recruitment, 入学, 或者对待学生的方式. Students with documented disabilities may request modifications, 住宿, or auxiliary aids that will enable them to participate in and benefit from all post-secondary educational 项目 和活动. 机构必须做出这样的改变, 在适当的时候, to ensure the academic program is accessible to the greatest extent possible by all students with disabilities.

什么是修改和调整?

Requested modifications or 住宿 must be considered “reasonable” and “appropriate” for an individual’s disability. An institution must make reasonable 住宿 in order to provide a student with a disability an equal opportunity to participate in the institution’s courses, 项目, 和活动. Appropriate and reasonable 住宿 are made on a case-by-case basis, as they are determined specifically on an individual’s functional impairments and provided in order to lessen the discriminatory effects of a disability.
